Gomati, named after the sacred Gomati River, is a district of supreme spiritual sanctity and archaeological importance, with its headquarters at Udaipur, the "City of Lakes." It is world-famous for the Tripura Sundari Temple (Matabari), one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India, where thousands gather for the Diwali Mela. The district is home to the Tepania Eco-Park and the massive Gumti Hydroelectric Project at Dumbur Lake. Gomati is a major producer of paddy, fish, and timber, serving as a vital agricultural pillar of the state. Historically, Udaipur was the ancient capital of the Manikya kings before Agartala and features numerous historic temples and royal ruins. The district features the scenic Chabimura rock carvings, often called the "Amazon of Tripura." With its blend of deep Vedic traditions, spectacular river-island landscapes, and immense water resources, Gomati stands as the spiritual and natural powerhouse of southern Tripura.
